I see SWAT teams using earmuffs sometimes. Isn't that pretty stupid not being able to hear very well? And if they're worried about their hearing, why don't they just wear earplugs?

Yup, it would be pretty stupid, although hearing loss can happen easily, especially with any firearm discharge in enclosed spaces. But the earmuffs you see are electronic, such as these Remingtons: http://www.opticsplanet.net/remington-r-electronic-thin-hearing-muffs.html . They not only cut out dangerous noise levels, but amplify other noises similar to a hearing aid. Great products. These type of electronic protectors are available in a plug as well, such as these Sportears: http://www.opticsplanet.net/sportear-sportear-ii-earmuffs.html . Great products for hunters also.
